Consumers are finally giving Ford Motor Co. credit for its quality gains, translating into higher residual values and auction prices for its used cars and trucks.

And that means lower lease prices for its customers.

According to the latest survey by Automotive Lease Guide, Ford posted the biggest gain in perceived quality — increasing 4.7 points over the last six months. During the same period, ALG said the average residual value of Ford’s cars increased by $2,400, while the industry as a whole saw only a $616 increase.

“They’re doing extremely well,” said Matt Traylen, chief economist for ALG. “This has been a huge upswing for Ford.”

Traylen attributed Ford’s gains to the strength of its new products, its “disciplined” approach to incentives and to favorable public opinion stemming from its decision to forgo a taxpayer bailout last year.

“That was very important in consumer minds,” he said. “Of course Ford’s new products also … have been very well received by the press and the public.”

These findings are important, because ALG’s numbers are used by banks and other lenders to set lease prices for cars and trucks.

Jim Farley, Ford’s global head of sales and marketing, said this report will have an “immediate impact” on monthly payments for customers who lease a Ford, Mercury or Lincoln product.

Moreover, he said the value of Ford’s cars and trucks is increasing at auction, meaning customers who buy their vehicles can expect to get thousands more back in their wallets when they trade them in.

On average, Farley said, Ford vehicles five years old or less are now selling for $3,000 more at auction than they were a year ago.

Farley said Ford will tout these gains in all of its upcoming advertising and sales promotions.

DETROIT — Ford division plans to launch a marketing campaign in July to tout the improved resale values of its vehicles.

Ford also will train dealers this fall to push higher resale values.

In fresh data from Automotive Lease Guide, Ford posted the largest increase of any automaker in ALG’s Perceived Quality Study between fall 2009 and spring 2010. The score measures how consumers view product quality. Honda was No. 1.

Ford’s higher scores mean higher residual values for its vehicles.

“The perception of our quality and the perception of our company have huge impacts on our customers,” Jim Farley, Ford Motor Co. group vice president of global marketing, said during a media call today. “It has a huge benefit to our company from a business standpoint because we can eliminate the discount and get back to pricing on quality and parity.”

ALG’s chief economist, Matt Traylen, said Ford’s average car resale value was up by $2,400 from 2009 to 2010. The numbers exclude light-truck values.

Traylen credited the higher resale values and quality perception in part to Ford’s avoiding a federal bailout. Also, the automaker restyled the 2010 Fusion and Taurus sedans.

Supply and demand

Farley said Ford is controlling production to match supply with demand, which increases resale values.

Toyota slipped in the study’s rankings from first to sixth, Traylen said. That’s largely due to Toyota’s recall of 8 million vehicles early this year because of unintended acceleration.

Ford will tout its improved resale values in summer and fall advertising on TV and radio, online and in print, Farley said.

Ford will update dealer brochures starting in July to highlight improved resale values.

“We feel the dealerships are the best places to tell the story in detail,” Farley said.

Ford will host a “large training event” for dealers in the third quarter. The event is centered on the 2011 Fusion, but it also will coach dealers to promote resale values to customers and to teach them about new vehicle technology, Farley said.

A total of 97 people attended the annual shareholders meeting in Wilmington, Deleware on Thursday, May 13th.

Voting results indicate that a total of 2,749,518,893 shares of common stock and 70,800,727 shares of Class B Stock with a total aggregate of 4,964,094,864 votes were represented in person or by proxy at the annual meeting. These shares represented 89.6% of all the votes that could have been cast at the annual meeting.

Reports indicate that Ford vehicles are affordable to repair, allowing for cheaper insurance rates.

Designing to reduce damage
In 2009, Ford opened a Paint and Body Technology Center to leverage the combined expertise of Ford’s repair and safety experts, auto repair technicians and insurance companies to identify design solutions and repair procedures that will lower repair costs.

“If your vehicle costs less to repair, it generally costs less to insure,” said Gerry Bonanni, Ford damageability collision repair senior engineer. “We’re working harder to help reduce insurers’ repair costs by developing more affordable repairs earlier in a vehicle’s development.”

“It’s great that Ford gets insurance industry insight about how to improve repairability of its vehicle designs,” said Mark Woirol, project manager with Allstate Insurance Company’s Tech-Cor Applied Research Center, which works with automakers, insurers and repairers to make cars more damage-resistant and repair methods more cost-efficient. “We’ve never been as involved in an automaker’s product development process as we have since Ford invited us to participate.”

For example, Ford Focus maintained its hold on the top spot in the four-door small car segment thanks in part to a bumper design improvements.

“Ford’s repair-ability experts and safety engineers made the Focus’s bumper bigger and stronger to better protect adjacent components,” said Larry Coan, Ford damageability engineer. “The new technology center will help us build on these leading efforts.”

Higher resale values, fewer warranty repairs
In another key area of vehicle affordability, Ford’s resale values outpaced the industry by rising 23 percent according to the latest National Automobile Dealers Association auction data. The gains resulted from stronger demand for Ford’s new vehicles and improved quality and durability ratings.

“Rising resale values means more money in customers’ pockets when it is time to sell or trade in for a new vehicle,” Toney said. “Combine these savings with lower repair and maintenance costs and better fuel economy, and the cost to own a Ford product drops dramatically over the life of the vehicle.”

DEARBORN, Mich.,  2010 – In the past year, Ford Motor Company has reduced its use of paper made exclusively from virgin sources by 6,000 tons – the equivalent of a loaded freight train with two locomotives and 100 cars.

Those results were achieved through an increased use of paper from recycled content instead of virgin sources for all high-volume, consumer and employee printing projects. Beginning this year, about 2.2 million Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicle owner’s manuals will be printed annually in the U.S. on paper containing at least 10 percent recycled fiber and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The effort supports Ford’s comprehensive sustainability strategy.

“Increasing the use of recycled paper may sound like a small step for an automotive company, but the results have been anything but small,” said John Viera, Ford’s director of Sustainability and Environmental Policy. “Ford is working to educate our employees, designers, printers and suppliers on the value of using FSC-certified paper and incorporating it into all of our projects.”

The initiative has translated into several environmental benefits that helped save trees, reduce water and energy use, and lower CO2 emissions. These initiatives include:

• More than 12,000 trees preserved. Experts say 12,000 mature trees absorb 3 million pounds of CO2 annually and produce enough oxygen to support 24,000 humans
• Nearly 5.2 million gallons of waste water flow saved. That’s more than the total amount used by 200 average American households in a year
• Nearly 600,000 pounds of solid waste not generated. That’s approximately the total amount of waste generated everyday by 130,000 average Americans
• More than 1.1 million pounds net greenhouse gases prevented. That’s approximately the total amount of emissions produced annually by 76 average American homes
• More than 8.6 billion BTUs of energy not consumed. That’s nearly what the average American household uses for air conditioning each year.

According to the FSC, the U.S. is the largest market for paper products in the world, producing 90 million tons of paper annually and, in turn, consuming about 100 million tons. Using FSC-certified paper requires that wood products be sustainably handled from the forest where they were harvested to the pulp purchased by the paper mill and to the printer that manufactures the end project.

By using FSC-certified paper, Ford is supporting a range of sustainable benefits, such as reducing waste to landfills and ensuring that paper pulp is not harvested from endangered rainforest timber. Plus, FSC paper is produced domestically, supporting U.S. jobs. The FSC paper used by Ford is labeled as such in an ongoing effort to reinforce employee and consumer awareness of sustainable printing practices.

“Implementing our new paper strategy required changing the perceptions people had about FSC-certified paper being more expensive or not as readily available to printers,” said Nicole DesNoyer, who led a small group, including key suppliers and Ford’s Communications, Purchasing and Sustainability departments to advance the transition to recycled and certified sustainable paper. “The support there has been to make the change shows how serious Ford project managers and their suppliers are about incorporating sustainability actions to help create a better world.”

In addition to reducing the amount of virgin paper the company uses, Ford employees have made a conscious effort to reduce overall paper use and increase paper recycling.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Rob Dyrdek teamed up to make this “Mustang Skateboarding Video” as a marketing tool for the 2011 Ford Mustang. Evidently, in an upcoming episode of MTV Fantasy Factory, Rob Dyrdek had a skatepark built for cars. The video is only a teaser but has some mind-blowing shots nonetheless.

Rayong, Thailand – July , 2010 – Production of Ford Motor Company’s globally popular small car, the Ford Fiesta, kicked off today during an official ceremony at AutoAlliance Thailand’s (AAT) new, state-of-the-art passenger car manufacturing facility in Rayong, Thailand.

Ford executives Raj Nair, vice president, Operations, Asia Pacific and Africa, and Peter Fleet, president, ASEAN, drove a pair of the first Thai-built Fiestas – a Highlight Silver four-door sedan and Chili Orange five-door hatchback – off the line to mark the official start of production.
Volume production is scheduled to ramp up at the Rayong plant over the coming weeks, with vehicles becoming available at Ford dealerships in Thailand and ASEAN markets from September.

“Today’s celebration and start of production in Thailand marks the latest milestone in the global success story for Ford Fiesta,” said Nair. “The Fiesta – which is now being built in five of Ford’s global production hubs and available on five continents – is a leading example of our One Ford plan to develop vehicles that meet the needs, wants and expectations of customers around the world.”

Fiesta will be built in the new 70,000 sqm., US$500 million state-of-the-art passenger car plant at AAT. The new passenger car plant utilizes the latest auto manufacturing technologies, automated systems and process, and includes a fully integrated stamping line and body shop, trim and final process area.

The paint shop uses the world-class and environmentally-friendly three-wet technology paint process, which dramatically reduces VOC and CO2 emissions and waste, and improves painting quality.

“This new facility underscores the importance Ford places on the Thai market and the ASEAN region,” added Nair. “Fiesta will be built utilizing the latest auto manufacturing technologies to ensure world-class safety, quality and environmental friendliness.”

The debut of the newest Ford global compact in the ASEAN region follows a series of global introductions that started in Europe and have progressively moved around the world. Since its introduction, nearly one million Fiestas have been sold globally.

When developing the new Fiesta, Ford conducted extensive global customer research. Findings clearly indicated the need for style topped the list of customer desires everywhere in the world.

“Fiesta was developed with customers, not just for them,” explained Peter Fleet. “Fuel economy, spirited performance and efficient use of space are universal desires, across global markets – and Fiesta delivers.”

“In Asia Pacific, Europe and North America, customers are looking for a distinctively designed small car that offers world-class quality, convenience, comfort and connectivity,” added Fleet.

Designed to be versatile, personal and adaptable, Fiesta delivers best-in-class safety, convenience, and operating cost, as well as an expressive color palette. The Fiesta also features several first-in-class technologies in the ASEAN markets, such as PowerShift automatic transmission and connectivity that includes Voice Control communications with Bluetooth, and automatic climate control.

“We are absolutely confident that the Fiesta is the right car at the right time, and that consumers in Thailand and across ASEAN will respond with the same enthusiasm as have the nearly one million new Ford Fiesta owners around the world,” explained Fleet.
